29 February 2008 celebrated as Gift from God (Schrikkeldag gevierd als Kadootje van God).... Leap Day on the Beach in Gambia, West Africa.

Spectacular Football Match organized to celebrate Leap Day was to be seen on the Beach by Cape Point (Bakau) on 29-2-2008
where 2 courageous teams from the Gambia
were competing in an exciting game at the end of this Extra Day in the Leap Year 2008.
BAKAU Young Stars was challenging CAPE POINT Craft Market Team in their new outfit, sponsored by Ferry Dutch from the Netherlands. See Photos.
Referee David showed stern leadership in a passionate match, while the course of score was characteristically breathtaking
1-0 to 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and in the last lap of time Bakau Young Stars scored the Winning Goal with a Beauty in the Net.
The Young Star team of Bakau could be proud in their new football shirts, but also the 'losers' of Cape Point were content and excited about their performance this Leap Day Match 2008.

West Coast Radio in the GAMBIA (95.3 FM, www.westcoast.gm) an independent radio station with good reception and popular programmes on music and events, especially sports in English and Woloff
devoted attention to this exceptional event. West Coast Radio journalist Benjamin Wally Joof interviewed organizer Ferry Dutch in his programme on Thursday and the Good News of the Day was celebrated in the Studio by the WCRadio Sportsteam with Besenty Gomez, Akono Jaco and Matthew Mendy by Friday night 29/2.

In response Ferry Dutch is devoting his own radioprogramme this Saturdaynight (March 8, 2008) to African music from the Gambia and the West Coast of Africa.

Wherever you are this Saturdaynight 8 March 2008 : listen to Radio From Beyond special West Africa Worldmusic by online internet radio www.radiocentraal.com
Due to the timedifference with the Netherlands (21-23 hrs. RadioVanVerre)broadcasting time will be 20 till 22 hrs. local time in the Gambia.

Newly scored African music, such as King Kora from Kundu Bundung (Serrakunda) and the revered veteran kora-player Jabileh Diabaté bring into Ferry Dutch' memory the days that OKO DRAMMEH from the Gambia
was the first to introduce this then new brand of socalled 'world- & rootsmusic' into the Netherlands : de Afrika Festivals in het DHC-stadion van Delft.
Many multicultural Festivals would follow in the Low Countries, amongst which IFANG BONDI ('Be Your Self' in Mandinka language) excelled in the Tropical Institute and de Melkweg of Amsterdam, not so much later followed by SANKOBA (with Sloopy from Ghana) and Oko Drammeh's formation AKWAABA in the first NGOMA VAN ASSEN, organized by Ferry Dutch in 1985.

All over the market places in Gambia
the nightingale's voice of Youssou N'dour could be heard and soulfull dancerythms Mbalax, Sabar and Reggae from Gambia/Senegal and neighbouring countries Guinee, Mali, Guinea-Bissao, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast will be programmed in abundance this Saturdaynight (8 March 2008), well diversified with tremendously popular westafrican Reggae music by ALPHA BLONDY and the like, as well as by flamencotype korâ-singers (Flamenkora)

    BESENTY GOMEZ:

    Hi Fred,

Word cannot express my heart felt thanks and gratitude for receiving your email. You've made me, my colleagues and The Gambia proud for the special sporting programme organised on the 29th February 2008 to celebrate the Leap Year. Your skills in organisation at such a short notice and time in The Gambia were splinded and worthy of emulation. You made the sports crew of Benjamin Wally Joof, Akono Jaquin, Bakary B Baldeh, Matthew Mendy, Pascal Camara, Ya Sally Njie and myself at West Coast Radio great by honouring our invitation to be part of our Leap Year night broadcast. We loved it and enjoyed the small get to gether we had after the broadcast mixed with Akon Jaquin aka D J Owl's African collection hits.

We appreciate it and do hope and pray that you will be back in The Gambia soon for more cultural and sporting exchange programmes. We at the Sport Unit of West Coast would support any initiative geared towards training and twining of our media outlets.

Wishing you, your wife and family as well as loved ones a blessed Easter and a good Good Friday.

until I come your way again,

    I shall always remain
